ninth和the ninth是有区别的。the ninth表示特指的第九个，是序数词的基本用法。
序数词表示顺序，因为在表示顺序的时候，是特指某一个事物在一连串事物里的顺序，所以序数词前面一般加定冠词the来表示特指意义。
序数词第一到第三为基本字根：first、second、third。其余序数词在基数词后面加字尾-th，如fourth、sixth、tenth等，其中第五、第八、第九和第十二，字根发生变化：fifth、eighth、ninth、twelfth。
从十三到十九的两位数，只需在相应基数词后面加-th构成：thirteenth、fifteenth、eighteenth。
